Overview

This 5-day, 4-night journey connects the magical mountain city of Chongqing, the thousand-year-old waterfall town of Furong, and the world-class landscapes of Zhangjiajie.

Begin with Chongqing’s extraordinary urban scenery, including hillside neighbourhoods, river crossings and illuminated night views. Continue to Furong Town, where traditional Tujia architecture, stone-paved streets and a dramatic waterfall create one of western Hunan’s most distinctive ancient-town landscapes.

The journey then explores Zhangjiajie’s essential natural highlights, including Tianmen Mountain, Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain and the spectacular Grand Canyon Glass Bridge.

With a smooth one-way route and sufficient time at each major destination, the itinerary combines modern city life, ancient-town culture, mountain scenery and thrilling high-altitude experiences without unnecessary backtracking.

Itinerary

Day 1 | Chongqing City Exploration

Travel from Chengdu to Chongqing and begin your journey through one of China’s most extraordinary urban landscapes.

Upon arrival, your private driver will meet you and introduce some of Chongqing’s major landmarks and their historical background during the transfer.

Begin at the Liziba Viewing Platform, where Chongqing’s famous monorail passes directly through a residential building, vividly demonstrating the city’s unusual multi-level terrain and architectural creativity.

Continue to Shancheng Lane, a historic hillside walkway built along the cliffs. Walk through traditional stairways and old neighbourhood streets while enjoying views towards the river and experiencing the distinctive character of old Chongqing.

Next, take the Yangtze River Cableway across the river and admire the dense city skyline from above.

Continue to the historic Shibati Traditional Area, where stairways once connected Chongqing’s upper and lower districts and where restored architecture recalls the everyday life of the old mountain city.

As evening falls, visit Hongya Cave, famous for its brightly illuminated stilted buildings rising above the riverfront.

Day 2 | Chongqing to Furong Town

Depart Chongqing in the morning and travel by high-speed train towards Zhangjiajie, where your private driver will meet you and continue the journey to Furong Town.

After arrival, explore the historic Five-Mile Stone Street, the heart of this ancient settlement.

The winding stone-paved lanes follow the natural hillside and are lined with traditional Tujia stilted buildings and local shops. The town also served as a filming location for the classic Chinese film Furong Town.

Visit cultural landmarks such as Tuwang Bridge and Baishou Hall while experiencing the traditional atmosphere of the old town.

Continue to the spectacular Furong Town Waterfall, which drops dramatically from the cliff beneath the settlement.

Walk along the viewing platforms and waterfall pathways for close-up views of the rushing water and surrounding Youshui River valley.

Remain in the town into the evening to experience Furong’s beautifully illuminated night scenery.

Day 3 | Furong Town to Zhangjiajie – Tianmen Mountain

Leave Furong Town and travel to Tianmen Mountain.

Ride the mountain cableway towards the summit and follow cliffside pathways through dramatic high-altitude scenery.

Visit the famous Glass Skywalk and the enormous natural Tianmen Cave, often described as a gateway to the sky.

The mountain is also known for its spectacular 99-Bend Road, which winds dramatically across the mountainside below.

Later, return to central Zhangjiajie.

In the evening, explore Dayong Ancient City and the illuminated 72 Tujia Stilted Buildings, where traditional architectural elements and colourful lighting create one of Zhangjiajie’s most recognisable

Day 4 | Zhangjiajie National Forest Park – Yuanjiajie & Tianzi Mountain

Spend the day exploring the core landscapes of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.

Begin at Yuanjiajie, where cliffside paths provide close-up views of Zhangjiajie’s towering sandstone formations.

The area is closely associated with the floating mountain landscapes seen in Avatar. Visit famous viewpoints including Mihun Terrace and the natural First Bridge Under Heaven.

Continue to Tianzi Mountain, located in the northwestern section of Wulingyuan.

From the mountain viewpoints, admire sweeping panoramas across the surrounding sandstone peak forest and visit areas around Helong Park.

Finish the visit by descending via the Tianzi Mountain Cableway.

In the evening, you may choose to attend the Charming Xiangxi cultural performance featuring local folk traditions.

Day 5 | Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge & Return to Chengdu

Travel to Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and visit the famous Glass Bridge, one of the area’s most dramatic attractions.

The bridge stretches approximately 536 metres across the canyon and stands around 300 metres above the valley floor.

Walk across the transparent surface while looking down into the deep gorge below. When mist gathers around the mountains, the experience can feel like walking through the clouds.

Continue with the high-altitude zipline, flying across the canyon while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountain landscape.

Afterwards, follow the mountain pathways down through the scenic area.

Return to central Zhangjiajie and continue to the railway station for the onward journey to Chengdu, bringing this five-day journey through Chongqing, Furong Town and Zhangjiajie to a conclusion.
