Overview

This private 8-day, 7-night journey connects modern Shanghai with the extraordinary landscapes and traditional culture of western Hunan.

Spend two days exploring Shanghai’s iconic skyline, classical gardens, historic neighbourhoods and distinctive Haipai culture before flying to Zhangjiajie for an in-depth exploration of its world-famous natural scenery.

Over the following days, discover Tianmen Mountain, the dramatic sandstone formations of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, the Bailong Elevator, Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge and the underground wonders of Yellow Dragon Cave.

The journey then continues to the waterfall town of Furong and historic Fenghuang Ancient Town, offering an immersive introduction to the traditions and everyday life of the Tujia and Miao communities.

With private transfers and English-speaking guide services, the itinerary combines iconic city landmarks, extraordinary natural scenery and ancient-town culture while maintaining a comfortable and efficient travel pace.

Itinerary

Day 1 | Arrival in Shanghai & First Impressions of the City

Upon arrival in Shanghai, your private driver will meet you outside the baggage claim area. During the transfer, your driver will introduce some of Shanghai’s major landmarks and their historical background.

After settling in, ascend to the 118th-floor observation deck of Shanghai Tower for panoramic views across the city.

Continue to Yu Garden and the City God Temple area, where traditional architecture and lively neighbourhood streets reveal a more historic side of Shanghai.

Walk along Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street and discover some of the city’s long-established shops before taking a Huangpu River cruise for views of the Bund and Pudong skyline.

Later, explore Tianzifang or Sinan Mansions, browsing small boutiques, creative shops and historic lanes while experiencing Shanghai’s relaxed artistic atmosphere.

Day 2 | Shanghai Culture & Historic Neighbourhoods

Begin the day at Jing’an Temple, experiencing a peaceful Buddhist atmosphere surrounded by the modern city.

Continue to the Shanghai Museum, home to important collections of Chinese bronzes, paintings, calligraphy, ceramics and other historic artefacts.

Later, visit Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, where waterways, stone bridges and Ming- and Qing-style streets create the atmosphere of a traditional Jiangnan water town.

Spend time wandering through the old lanes and exploring local food and neighbourhood life.

In the evening, walk along Wukang Road and Anfu Road, where historic villas and tree-lined streets showcase one of Shanghai’s most distinctive cultural neighbourhoods.

Day 3 | Shanghai to Zhangjiajie – Beginning the Mountain Journey

Fly from Shanghai to Zhangjiajie, with the flight taking approximately two hours.

Upon arrival, your private transfer will take you to the Wulingyuan area.

After settling in, enter Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and enjoy a relaxing walk along Golden Whip Stream.

Follow the clear mountain stream through dense forest while dramatic sandstone peaks rise overhead.

In the evening, explore Xibu Street and experience the atmosphere of Wulingyuan while discovering local Tujia culture and regional specialities.

Day 4 | Yuanjiajie & the Avatar Peak Forest

Enter Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and ride the famous Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie.

Explore famous viewpoints including Hallelujah Mountain, Mihun Terrace and the natural First Bridge Under Heaven.

The extraordinary sandstone pillars and deep valleys in this region are closely associated with the floating mountain scenery seen in Avatar.

Continue to Tianzi Mountain, where viewpoints overlook an immense landscape of towering peaks and drifting clouds.

See famous formations such as the Imperial Brush Peaks and Fairy Presenting Flowers.

In the evening, you may choose to attend the Charming Xiangxi cultural performance featuring local folk traditions.

Day 5 | Tianmen Mountain & Zhangjiajie Nightlife

Explore Tianmen Mountain, beginning with a ride on its spectacular mountain cableway.

Walk along the famous Glass Skywalk, visit the enormous natural Tianmen Cave and continue towards Yunmeng Peak for panoramic mountain views.

Explore the Guigu Cliffside Path and the Davidia Garden while discovering the mountain’s forest environment and dramatic cliff scenery.

In the evening, return to central Zhangjiajie and visit the illuminated 72 Tujia Stilted Buildings and Dayong Ancient City.

Spend some time exploring the lively night-time streets and discovering local snacks.

Day 6 | Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon & Yellow Dragon Cave

Travel to Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and experience the famous Glass Bridge, suspended high above the valley.

Walk across the transparent bridge while looking down into the dramatic canyon landscape below.

Continue to Yellow Dragon Cave, an extensive underground karst system filled with stalactites, stalagmites, rock formations and underground waterways.

Explore the cave and take a boat ride through sections of its subterranean river.

Later, return to Wulingyuan for a relaxed evening.

Day 7 | Furong Town & Fenghuang Ancient Town

Leave Zhangjiajie and travel approximately 1.5 hours to Furong Town, a historic settlement dramatically built around a waterfall.

Walk along the Five-Mile Stone Street, visit the spectacular Furong Waterfall and explore the historic Tusi Palace.

From elevated viewpoints, enjoy panoramic views over the ancient town and the Youshui River.

Later, continue for approximately one hour to Fenghuang Ancient Town.

As night falls, explore the illuminated streets beside the Tuojiang River, admire the traditional stilted houses and wander through the town’s lively bar streets and local food areas.

Day 8 | Fenghuang Ancient Town & Departure

Begin the final morning with a peaceful walk through Fenghuang Ancient Town, when mist often hangs above the Tuojiang River and the historic streets are quieter.

Explore Hongqiao Bridge, the Former Residence of Shen Congwen and the Yang Family Ancestral Hall.

Take a boat ride along the Tuojiang River, passing landmarks such as Wanming Pagoda and traditional riverside architecture.

Spend some time browsing for local handicrafts such as Miao silver jewellery, batik products and ginger candy.

Later, return to Zhangjiajie for your onward departure, bringing this journey through Shanghai, Zhangjiajie, Furong and Fenghuang to a memorable conclusion.

What are deposit & payment requirements?

1. Deposit: Once you are ready to confirm your booking, a non-refundable planning deposit of USD 300 per person is required to start arranging your trip. This amount will be credited toward your total trip cost and deducted from the final balance.

2. Final Payment: The remaining balance must be paid 45 days prior to departure. For bookings made within 45 days of departure, full payment may be required at the time of booking confirmation. Payments can be made via credit card, bank transfer, WeChat Pay, or Alipay.
